I am very concerned by the fact that in New Brunswick, there are thousands of men and women who day after day, wake-up and go to work but live in poverty.  These workers receive a less than decent wage and have no more than the provincial employment standards to protect them in their workplaces. 
 
As you are certainly aware, a decent minimum wage is a central part of lifting workers out of poverty. Our province’s minimum wage at $10.30 an hour, the lowest in Canada, is not enough for them and their family to live a decent secure life; it has to increase to $15.00 an hour. To further help these hard working citizens, our province needs to upgrade its employment standards. Some of the changes that would help them are paid sick days so they don’t have to work when sick, equal pay for work of equal or comparative value so that their experience and education is recognized, fairly compensated overtime hours to make up for the time sacrificed with family in order to better support them and better protection when they lose their job without notice. 
 
Having a decent wage and fair employment standards can bring real change in our province and make a positive difference in the lives of so many of our citizens who are struggling every day to put food on the table and a roof over their family’s head!
