Call To Action - 2024-25 Provincial Budget

On March 19, the 2024-25 provincial budget will be tabled. We encourage you to send this letter to the Hon. Ernie Steeves, Minister of Finance and Treasury Board with our recommendations for a New Brunswick without poverty. We anticipate investments in our social programs, affordable and social housing, and working conditions!

  • 4 people at a rally.

    Employment Standards and Workers

    ● Increase the minimum wage (currently, $14.75) to a living wage ($20 per hour across the province).

    ● Add 10 employer-paid sick days to the Employment Standards Act.

    ● Increase and simplify access to overtime pay.

    ● Compensate workers for the costs of mandatory work clothing and equipment.

  • 2 people holding the banner For a just and equitable society - Pour une société juste et équitable

    Social Assistance

    ● Raise the social assistance rates immediately, of all categories, to the poverty line and adjust them accordingly every following year. In 2022, New Brunswick had the lowest social assistance rates across all Canadian provinces.

    ● Create a revised application and eligibility process for the Extended Benefits Program.

    ● Abolish the Household Income Policy.

    ● Demand that all government websites, including social assistance, be accessible for persons with various disabilities.

    ● Improve access to and ability to secure tools to make remaining at home simpler and easier, as well as easy access to appropriate hours of homecare.

    Employment Insurance

One of the Common Front’s areas of focus since its inception has been the federal Employment Insurance (EI) program. We will continue to monitor, intervene when necessary and support groups advocating for a more accessible EI program, including for women and seasonal workers.

We support organizations fighting for comprehensive public healthcare, including access to abortion and reproductive justice in New Brunswick.
